W A X L Y R I C A L
As a development from 'Skin', L A N A was interested in using wax as a medium due its delicate and transparent qualities. Both these pieces are inscribed with henna. Henna is a dye derived from a plant and is traditionally used in Asia and the Middle East as an art medium to adorn women's bodies at weddings and celebrations. Henna is regarded as having 'barakah', blessings, and is applied for luck as well as joy and beauty. Instead of the complex decorative patterns that are traditionally associated with henna, here Arabic calligraphy is applied.
Wax lyrical is a wax cast of L A N A ' s hand. On the palm reads the inscription 'bismillah al rahman al rahem', 'in the name of Allah, the most gracious, most merciful'. This phrase is recited before each chapter of the Qur'an. On the back of the hand the first part of this phrase, 'bismillah', is repeated. Each inscription is written in a contemporary and stylised manner.
